Non- Contact Thermometers in the Covid-19 Era
Articles / 7 July, 2022
Use of non contact thermometers popularly called ‘temperature guns’ is increasingly common during this period of Covid-19 outbreak. Government offices, companies, schools and banks screen people entering their buildings. Yet, there are Covid-19 transmissions by people who have not shown symptoms. The question remains, is temperature guns all we need in stopping the spread of the corona virus? No, Just because an infrared thermometer says someone has a high temperature does not mean the person is sick, let alone carrying the virus. They could have been exercising, they could be taking certain drugs. If someone is sweating or has been in front of a fan and the forehead skin has become cool, he could register at a normal temperature when he is actually running hot. And, of course, aspirin and some other pain relievers can reduce body temperature too, and mask a high fever. No thermometer is perfect. The biggest shortcoming is that they measure skin temperature, which can be higher or lower than core body temperature, the key determinant for fevers. However, if the goal is to pick up symptoms,eg,fever,in some people before they even realize they are infected, non contact thermometers are the best bet. Entry point screening should be paired with collecting data about the patient’s movement over the past few weeks which can later help with tracing their contacts if confirmed positive for Covid-19. Individuals/public should also be given information to increase disease awareness and encouraged to practice good personal hygiene.
