Smoking leads to disease and disability and harms nearly every organ of the body. We will use this discussion that happened between an elderly man and his pharmacist to highlight some of the adverse effects of smoking on the human body. He informed his pharmacist that he has been smoking for a lifetime and more(longer than 72 years); and he is still alive! Maybe he is super human ? ðŸ¤·â™‚ï¸ Grandfather: Greetings son, I hope you brought the paracetamol I sent for; so he asked while smoking under the umbrella tree as usual. Pharmacist: Yes sir, I did. The pharmacist quickly handed over the paracetamol tablets to him and headed toward his room. Grandfather: Excuse me, I really have a lot of questions, who is wrong? i have been smoking for decades and i am still strong, alive and kicking. Yet the federal ministry of health still warns that smokers are liable to die young. Pharmacist: You see Sir, When people smoke, their brain cells are stimulated, they suddenly begin to feel high, there is this sense of reward, and it also help in soothing pain. Our world is full of depressed people and everyone is trying to find their way out of their condition, a lot of people smoke because they feel relieved from their problems temporarily. However, SMOKING IS DANGEROUS. When a cigarette burns, it releases over 6,500 chemicals and all are extremely harmful to the body. Cigarette contains DDT(dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) which is part of the elements used in making insecticides, what about methanol which is a part of the component of jet fuel, cigarette has ammonia (NH3) which is a part of bleach and also arsenic, a component of rat poison. Effect of smoking on your body system includes; Stroke : this is very common to the smokers, and this is because smoking gradually increase blood pressure and also, there is a buildup of Cholesterol and higher probability of blood clotting. When there is clotting of blood, blood vessels are blocked which prevents the flow of blood to the brain. Breathing and lungs problems: The respiratory organs consist of sacs used for inhaling and exhaling, these sacs are naturally spongy and elastic, so they can perform their job well but, for a smoker, their respiratory sacs have loses their elasticity, inhaling and exhaling becomes difficult, almost impossible. People that don’t smoke, but inhale a lot of smoke are also at a great risk of experiencing those bad effects, just as the smoker. It is called second hand smoking Second hand smoke, (smoke puffed out by a smoker) is just enough to start a heart attack. Now back to my main argument, who lied? Actually both sides were correct, you could smoke and still live long which is not always the case, there are individuals who have certain genes which protect cells in the body from the harm caused by smoking, these cells also repair themselves. Can I shock you? These genes reduce the risk of cancer by almost 12%. Maybe that’s the reason why people like you are still alive. From the brief journey i have taken us through, i have a question, why would you risk catching throat cancer? Why do you want to put yourself under the risk of asthma? Would you like to have a colored teeth and a bad breath? Whatever your answers are determines if you'd try a stick of cigarette or never move close to one.
